One of Japan's oldest regions for ceramics production, Tokoname is famed for its red clay (Shudei) teapots and cups. For over 900 years, potters of Tokoname have continued to impress the Japanese with their ceramic artistry. Only in Tokoname can one find such fine red clay, with its relatively high iron content which has been said to enhance the flavor of teas. Tokoname wares are generally high-fired and unglazed.
