Dating back to the 1100's, Shigaraki potters have been known for producing the imperfect "wabi-sabi", rustic appearance of its wares, usually consisting of tea sets and everyday utensils. The clay used for Shigaraki wares is coarse due to its high sand content, thus giving it a rough, sturdy appeal. The natural ash deposits that are produced on the clay when fired are characteristic of Shigaraki ceramics.
